Who This Trip Is For
Who Should Dive Protea Banks?
Protea Banks is not a beginner dive destination — and that’s exactly why it’s so special.
These dives are designed for experienced, confident divers who are comfortable in deeper water, blue-water conditions, and moderate to strong currents. If you love big animals, dramatic underwater landscapes, and the thrill of true adventure diving, Protea Banks will likely become one of the highlights of your diving life.
This experience is ideal for you if:
- You are Advanced Open Water certified (or equivalent)
- You have 50+ logged dives
- You are comfortable descending in blue water and managing buoyancy at depth
- You want real shark encounters, not aquarium-style diving
If you are newly certified, nervous in current, or prefer shallow reef diving, we’ll usually recommend Aliwal Shoal or Sodwana Bay instead — both of which offer fantastic marine life in more forgiving conditions.
Our goal is simple: put the right divers on the right dives so everyone has an incredible, safe experience.

How a Typical Protea Banks Trip Works
What a Typical Protea Banks Dive Day Looks Like
Protea Banks diving is an experience in itself — both above and below the water.
Most dive days start early in the morning, when conditions are at their best. You’ll meet the team at the launch site near Shelly Beach or Margate, where you’ll receive a full dive briefing covering:
- The dive plan and site
- Expected conditions
- Shark activity
- Safety procedures
- Entry and ascent metho
You’ll then launch from the beach in powerful rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) — a thrilling surf launch that’s part of the Protea Banks adventure.
Once on site, you’ll descend quickly to depth, often into blue water, and spend your bottom time exploring pinnacles, reef edges, and open-water shark highways. Every dive is fully guided, with conservative profiles and strict safety protocols.
Between dives, you’ll enjoy surface intervals on the boat or back on shore, depending on the day’s schedule and sea conditions.
Every dive is:
- Planned
- Briefed
- Guided
- And fully debriefed
This is professional, expedition-style diving, not casual holiday reef diving.
